California

The Wild Boar

Wild-Boar
I was driving along a winding road through the California Pacific foothills toward the small community of Ladoga. There were a few scattered oaks, but it was mostly dried grasses blowing in the gentle breeze on rolling hills.
As I began pulling around a bend in the road, I saw a dark shape over on the right moving swiftly towards me. At first it’s movement and shape were unfamiliar; then it became clear! It was a large wild boar running rapidly through the dried grass. Before I could stop and grab my camera, he has moved past me and down into a ravine.
I thought that it was odd to see him alone, but he was an impressive beast. Perhaps I’ll see more.

Ishi the Last Yahi

Ishi-blog
Years ago I read a book about Ishi the last Yahi Indian in California. It’s a tragic but very moving story. I always think about him when I’m in the California foothills. Then a while ago I was driving through the foothills in Oroville and inadvertently came upon this marker where he was discovered in 1911.

Round Barn Revisited

This round barn that I posted a photograph of in 2007 is in Yolo County, CA near the town of Esparto.
Recently I received an interesting comment from a person who had lived on this farm from 1980 until 2004. She reported on how this round barn was home to an enormous colony of bats; and how in the evenings they would watch them, by the thousands, flying out of the main entrance of the barn.
Thank you Nancy!
