Farming

Round Barn Revisited

This round barn that I posted a photograph of in 2007 is in Yolo County, CA near the town of Esparto.
Recently I received an interesting comment from a person who had lived on this farm from 1980 until 2004. She reported on how this round barn was home to an enormous colony of bats; and how in the evenings they would watch them, by the thousands, flying out of the main entrance of the barn.
Thank you Nancy!

Bull Thistles and More

photo of a pile of dried thistles

This is one big pile of Bull thistles!

This pile of Bull thistles just keeps getting bigger, and I’m not even half done yet. I want to get this done so that we can water the area and get the thistles to germinate so that they can be sprayed. I don’t want to have to deal with these seven foot thistles again next year; this will make a nice wildlife area without them.
As I’ve been cleaning them out I’ve found several patches of poison oak; but I’ve sprayed it and it seems to be drying and under control.

New Website aids Farmers

The University of California Cooperative Extension has launched a new website (Farm Business and Marketplace) to help smaller farmers, and those new to farming, learn the business and marketing skills necessary to succeed with their enterprise.  The goal of the website is “To provide a ‘one stop’ place where owners and managers of Central Coast farms can access research based information to assist with business and marketing decisions and success.”  The site appears to be laid out well and provides quite a bit of useful information for the small scale farmer.
