Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Very common in the far northern part of the Sacramento Valley around Redding, Ca; I recently took this photo of the swallowtail down here near Putah Creek.

Young Turkeys

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

A wild hen and her poults have recently shown up at Sarge’s Cache Creek Ranch. Here they are feeding on the other side of the creek.

Blacktail Doe

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I surprised her this morning; and luckily I had the camera ready. No special story, I just thought that it was a classic image of the local deer in the dry foothills of the Pacific range in California.

Young Swainsons Hawk

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

I think that the young Swainsons Hawk may have survived the dreaded Great Horned Owl attack.  Here are some photos of an adult ( top) and a young hawk in a another tree close to the nesting tree.
It appears as if the adult has given the young bird a small ground squirrel.

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

This is a flowering plant that is referred to locally as Indian Tobacco. I have no idea as to its addictive properties, however the the hummingbirds love it.
