This young cat recently showed up around here, and lately she’s been investigating the vegetable garden. Now she’s discovered the watering can. That’s not a very big opening, but with the “folding back of the ears” technique there appears to be plenty of room to partake of some cool refreshment.

Sarge’s tomato seedlings are now in the ground, but they took quite a beating when some extreme weather came through that afternoon. I think that they’ll be OK, and there are replacements on hand if needed.
There are over twenty varieties including Brandywine Yellows, Granny Smiths, Speckled Romans , and Golden Raves. This week we’ll finish the planting with zucchinis, eggplants, and cucumbers.

Here it is, time to start tomatoes again. I can’t believe it! I just pulled the old ones out.
But, we’re starting from seed, and last year we started way too late. The plants were never really big enough at the time that they needed to be planted in the main garden. Sarge now has his “ten thousand” varieties on order, so they should be in the hothouse soon.

I usually write about “Sarge’s” Cache Creek Ranch, but I could also say Thurb’s Cache Creek Ranch. I don’t know why but some of his friends call him Sarge while others call him Thurb. Anyway, thank you for the cornucopia of veggies this summer.

There is a definate feel of fall in the air. I’ve cleared out the summer vegetable garden, and am getting ready to till in some manure.

A friend of mine took these pictures of burning,tilling, and some great autumn colors in the persimmons.

Cedar Waxwings save the day!
After the lower persimmons have been harvested, the upper majority rapidly become over-ripe and begin falling as juicy little bombs. But this year these voracious little creatures salvaged every last morsel and all was well.
