Black-backed Woodpecker

I read an article the other day raising concern about the Black-backed woodpecker; it is fairly rare and becoming more so. It’s primary habitat is forested areas that have had recent fires. Ironically, the problem appears to be that wildfire suppression has been more effective in recent years. Their natural food supply of insects that live in these burned trees is dwindling.
Anyway, I’ve never seen one; in fact I’ve only just recently seen a picture of one. It’s a pretty little bird with a great yellow crown. Here’s a sketch of him from a photograph by Tom Munson.
