The Yolo Wildlife Area had been closed for several months due to heavy rain. But on this day the entrance gate was open so I decided to investigate. The ponds were full of water, and I was alone as I explored the terrain. The red-winged blackbirds were out in force, and I saw a number of cinnamon teal.
Then I spotted this great blue heron up ahead. I said to myself, “He’ll fly before I’m ready to snap a picture; they always do!”. But he was holding still, and as I inched closer I got him in my sights. I took several photos of the great blue heron, and he never did fly!
