I had an interesting interaction with a Rufous hummingbird yesterday. It has been very dry around here recently, and I was beginning to fill the backyard bird bath when an excited hummer buzzed down and lit on the edge of the bath.
I was thinking ” yeah, I bet he’s really thirsty”, but he just sat there and stared at me.
Then when the bath was filled I began to return to the front yard, whereupon he took off and zoomed past me out to the front.
When I got to the front there he was hovering about his empty feeder, as if to say “Hey! don’t worry about the bath, let’s take care of the important stuff!”.
Well, I got the message and, albeit belatedly, I refilled his feeder.
