Latrodectus hesperus

Last year, one summer afternoon, a California farmer was working in an old barn when the ground beneath him gave way. He fell some five or six feet into the bottom of a pit. As the dust cleared, a broad shaft of sunlight revealed a “constellation” of bright little spheres. At first confused by the sight, he then became startled. And then when he had gathered his wits about him, he realized that he had fallen into a massive maternity ward of the black widow spider! Looking about and seeing several of the young ladies, he became terrified. Then verrrry carefully he climbed out of the pit, none the worse for wear. Apparently he had fallen into an underground storage area that hadn’t been used for years.
