Is it lunch yet?
I don’t think that my little friend is getting lunch today!
The end the season for Sarge’s Cache creek vegetable garden has arrived. This year we put down straw for weed control and water conservation. Now I have the garden roto-tilled and the straw all piled up to compost over the winter.

Sarge’s tomatoes and “other stuff” seem to be doing quite well in spite of the unseasonable weather that we’ve had recently!

The Straw Bed
This year we’re trying a different strategy for weed and moisture control; we’ve laid down a bed of wheat straw over the entire area. Now if the north wind doesn’t blow it all away, I think that we are set. I’ve watered it down and created some wind protection, so I think that it should work.
The new garden contains several varieties of peppers, cucumbers, and squash; plus a whole bunch of different kinds of tomatoes! Most of the tomatoes were started from seed in the greenhouse, and they seem fairly hardy. Here’s hoping for a bountiful crop.
I’ve been keeping a close eye on my squash plants; they’ve been flowering and producing some little specimens. But you know how zucchinis are: they wait until you’re not looking and then expand to the size of a fireplace log! However, I caught these guys just in time; just the right size for the grill. OK, the squash seem to be doing fine; but the leaves on one of my tomato plants are turning bright yellow. What’s up with that?!!
